Why You Should Not Write Your Own Resume

Let’s face it, most people don’t like writing. If you’re one of the few that have made a career out of it you are the exception, and most likely you’re not a professional resume writer or you wouldn’t be reading this post. Right?

So let’s get down to it…resume and career documents don’t follow your typical rules of writing. Here are the top 5 reasons you SHOULD NOT write your own resume.

#1 – You’re uncomfortable talking about yourself in the third person. Resumes don’t include the word “I” and getting around using it is something that takes a lot of time, practice and wordsmithing.

#2 – You tend to over-embellish when you tell a story. Resumes, in a way, are short stories about your accomplishments, so if you tend to run on-and-on before you get to the “point,” leave the writing to a professional.

#3 – You’re just not sure what you want to do next. If you keep going back and forth between different career paths, it will be difficult to blend the two (or three). Professional writers know the right questions to ask and how to showcase transferable skills for any profession.

#4 – You’re a computer programer, IT professional, engineer, etc. Those careers contain many acronyms, associations and certifications. Writers know which ones are common knowledge in the industry, which ones to expand on and which ones to leave out.

#5 – You just don’t have the time. A well crafted resume takes time. A writer will take out the guess work for what you need to include, saving you valuable time you could be spending on your job search.

Not convinced yet?

There are many websites and templates that you can use to write your own resume, it’s up to you to decide to hire a professional or not. Look at your current resume, look at professionally written sample and compare. If you want to stand out from the crowd and get noticed in six seconds or less – you’ve come to the right place.
